Capítulo 2: Las rocas cristalinas proterozoicas de Sonora y su importancia para la reconstrucción del margen continental SW de Laurencia—la pieza mexicana del rompecabezas de Rodinia

Una nueva etapa de estudios geocronológicos, geoquímicos e isotópicos sobre el basamento cristalino proterozoico de Sonora, realizada en los últimos años, ha permitido establecer una hipótesis sobre la distribución de las provincias corticales paleoproterozoicas Mojave, Yavapai y Mazatzal en el NW de México. Esta nueva distribución de provincias ayuda a reconstruir con mayor precisión la geología del margen SW de Laurencia y establece una nueva plantilla geológica de este margen que podrá ser utilizada por investigadores de otros márgenes continentales para poner a prueba las ideas de reconstrucción existentes para el supercontinente Rodinia.
En este trabajo, además de presentar una visión general sobre el significado y evolución de estas provincias corticales paleoproterozoicas, también se introducen algunos conceptos geológicos novedosos para la geología de Sonora, como el de la existencia de un doblez oroclinal que denominamos “doblez oroclinal Caborca”. Este doblez podría haberse formado durante el proceso de colisión (amalgamación) de arcos de islas paleoproterozoicos (Yavapai y Mazatzal) contra una zona continental preexistente (provincia Mojave). También se introduce como concepto novedoso la existencia de una zona de debilidad cortical paleoproterozoica en dirección NW-SE, asociada espacialmente a las rocas de la provincia Yavapai mexicana, que pudo haber condicionado notablemente algunos eventos geológicos desde tiempos proterozoicos hasta el Cuaternario y que permite conciliar muchos aspectos de la geología de Sonora.
