Abstract

It is concluded that: (1) the main source of sediments is the basin of the Rio Bravo, forming almost the entire coastal barrier; (2) the southernmost end of the barrier indicates the influence of another petrographic province, perhaps the basin of the Rio Soto la Marina; (3) the sediments in the interior of the lagoon are of two types: unaltered, derived from recent erosion in the basins of the streams that flow into it, and altered, originating from the erosion of ancient alluvium on the continental shore. Additionally, it is noted that zircon and tourmaline are more abundant in the interior of the lagoon (5% and 3%, respectively) than in the barrier, suggesting that the source of these minerals is the Tertiary alluvium of the continental shore.
