Abstract

Vanadinite is an intriguing mineral species. From a historical perspective, this lead vanadate had a very turbulent birth, having been discovered before vanadium itself. In contrast, its development has been very harmonious: its stages of growth have been characterized successively and without haste by chemical analyses of the substance, conscientious goniometric measurements, precise study of its powder diffraction pattern, determination of its lattice constants, and finally, its structural analysis.

From an economic point of view, it holds the same importance as other members of its systematic family as an ore of vanadium. This element is very abundant in the Earth's crust; however, unlike others such as iron, which easily accumulates in exploitable concentrations, vanadium is diluted, making its recovery difficult: there are no large reserves of vanadinite.

Accompanied by wulfenite, it tends to be found particularly in the western parts of the American continent. About 95% of the V2O5 produced in the Americas is used in the production of ferrovanadium (0.1 - 0.4% V). It is used as a stabilizer for hydrocarbons; occasionally, it replaces Cr, Mn, or Mo in the iron and steel industry.
