Physiography and sedimentology of the Balsas River Delta, Michoacán, México

At the request of the Secretariat of the Navy, the Institute of Geology provided support for the federal project in the Balsas River Basin, which included the construction of a seaport. In response to this request, a study was conducted on the deltaic deposits and the morphology of the coastline and the adjacent submarine area to determine the zones of greatest stability. On the landward part, direct observation and sediment sampling were carried out. In the submarine area, bathymetry was determined using an echo sounder, and sediment cores were taken; dredging was used to collect surface samples and samples from the walls of four canyons. The deltaic sediments were grouped into four sedimentary zones parallel to the coast based on their grain size.
