Abstract

The paleomagnetic analysis of an apparently homogeneous series of 22 superimposed eruptions forming a mountain range, evidence of the volcanism of the Huasteca (measured coordinates 21°N - 98°40'W), demonstrates that the volcanic activity of this series occurred in 4 phases, interrupted by rest periods of unknown durations. If the first phase corresponds to a period of geomagnetic reversal, the other three are due to variations in the direction of the local field during one or more phases of normal field. These stages are clarified by chemical and petrographic analyses, which help distinguish the differences in lava evolution between the magnetically defined eruption groups, differences emphasized by the alternation of mugearite-basalt cycles. These data highlight that the calculation of the dipolar field direction based on the thermoremanent magnetization of the lavas in a Hawaiian-type series, similar to that of Tlanchinol, should only be done after a thorough analysis of volcanic activity. Paleomagnetism contributes to this analysis, alongside other research methods, whether laboratory or field-based. This series, likely of Astian age, allows for the calculation of the pole position (81°30' N - 116°W).
