Abstract

The area, located in the Oaxacan Mixteca Alta between 17°30’ and 17°45’ N and 97°20'-97°40' W, covers an approximate area of 950 km² of very rugged relief, where Mesozoic and Cenozoic rocks crop out.

Probably the oldest lithostratigraphic unit is the Tecocoyunca Group of Jurassic age. It consists of thin-bedded black limestone, interbedded with tar-bearing sandstone. The Teposcolula Limestone of Albian-Coniacian age unconformably overlies this unit. The Teposcolula Limestone consists of 500 to 600 m of cream to gray biopelmicrite, massively stratified, folded into two anticlinoria and one synclinorium oriented north-south. A marly limestone of Santonian-Maastrichtian age unconformably overlies the Teposcolula Limestone. The marly limestone consists of 300 to 400 m of impure cream to yellowish biomicrite, stratified in thin to medium beds. This unit occupies the synclinorium.

During the Early Tertiary Hidalgoan Orogeny, marine regression and regional uplift occurred. Erosion of the Cretaceous limestones formed 150 to 180 m of calclithic conglomerate of pebbles, cobbles, and boulders arranged in a reddish sandy matrix. The Early Tertiary Yanhuitlán Formation unconformably overlies the conglomerate. The Yanhuitlán Formation consists of 300 to 400 m of weakly consolidated, rhythmic mudstone, stratified in thin to medium beds, red and cream, subarkosic. It is conformably overlain by two tuff formations of Middle Tertiary age, rhyolitic to rhyodacitic composition, and 300 and 100 m thick respectively. These formations are unconformably covered by two sequences of andesitic flows, probably of Middle-Late Tertiary age. The lavas obstructed drainage, forming a lacustrine basin where 300 to 400 m of white to cream siliceous biomicrite accumulated, stratified in thin to medium beds, interbedded with slate, shale, sandstone, and peat lenses.

Igneous activity also included the emplacement of several hypabyssal andesitic bodies, apparently related to faulting. The age of emplacement is probably Middle to Late Tertiary. Quaternary alluvium fills the valleys, and caliche deposits partially cover the limestone ranges. Near Tamazulapan, travertine was deposited over a residual Quaternary soil; this deposit is associated with hydrothermal activity.
