Abstract

The German geologist Karl T. Sapper, a geologist at the institute, conducted the first geological survey of a region that included the Yucatán Peninsula and the states of Chiapas and Tabasco. It delineated the existing formations and described the region's orography. It consists of chapters (1) Geology, (2) Orography, (3) Hydrography, (4) Climatography and distribution of vegetation zones, and (5) Production. This last chapter includes mining; it mentions that the only producing mine was the Santa Fe mine in Pichucalco, Chiapas, with a gold grade of 300 grams per ton. This deposit is described as having contact metamorphism, dispersed in wollastonite embedded in diorite. The plates consist of two geological sections, three hypsometric maps of the vegetation and climatological zones, and a geological map of the states of Chiapas and Tabasco, at a scale of 1:1,000,000.
