Abstract

This first issue was published under the name "Geological Commission of Mexico," although the motto on the coat of arms read "Geological Institute of Mexico." In keeping with the motivations that prompted Del Castillo to found the Geological Institute, this issue convincingly demonstrates, through a detailed description of the fossils, the presence of the Jurassic in Mexico, which had only been suggested without verification. Furthermore, the vastness of the geographic distribution and its gradual transition to the Cretaceous are indicated. Although they referred to the Upper Jurassic, the authors' established rule was not to differentiate rock units beyond the category of system, due to the confusion prevailing at that time regarding age.
