Mexican Speleology - Caves of the Sierra Madre Oriental in the Xilitla Region

With this issue, scientific interest in Mexican caves is initiated, and the author, of Spanish origin, is distinguished as the pioneer of speleology in Mexico. The study area covers a sector of the Sierra Madre Oriental between Huichihuayan, S.L.P., and Xichú, Gto., encompassing both slopes of the mountain range. The description includes numerous caves and other karst structures such as sinkholes (locally known as "sótanos") and dolines that exist in the areas of Huichihuayan, El Jobo, Xilitla, Plan de Juárez, and Ahuacatlán in the state of S.L.P., as well as El Madroño in the state of Querétaro.
