Part I: Geology of the Plomosas Area, Chihuahua
Keywords:
Ordovician, tectonism, Mina Plomosas, limestone, JurassicAbstract
The three pre-Carboniferous rock outcrops, which had not previously been recognized, are located in the Mina Plomosas-Placer de Guadalupe area, covering a total area of just under 6.5 km². Within the Plomosas Formation, named by Burrows in 1909, six units were mapped, ranging in age from the Ordovician to the Jurassic; the total thickness is approximately 2,440 meters. The lower 610 meters of the section are composed of Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian rocks, predominantly limestone, similar to some contemporary formations in western Texas. The section from 610 meters to 915 meters, between the Pennsylvanian and Late Jurassic, is mainly composed of siltstone and conglomerate, consisting of a Permian sequence 150 to 300 meters thick (Wolfcampian-Leonardian), overlain by layers of undetermined age. The Permian sequence includes a reef. The Late Jurassic section, 910 meters thick, is composed of shale, sandstone, and limestone.
The area lies to the north of the main Ouachita orientation; the Paleozoic tectonism was less intense than in the Marathon Uplift. Nevertheless, angular unconformities within the Permian sequence indicate Permian movements.
Laramide tectonism was extreme, with major thrusts towards the west. Two large sections are inverted. Crustal shortening of approximately 16 km can be demonstrated near the Mina Plomosas. The sericite and microspar (finely recrystallized limestone) of the Paleozoic and Jurassic rocks are probably the result of incipient metamorphism, mainly caused by Laramide deformation.
The Mina Plomosas is an important producer of lead and zinc. A small gold placer is located near Placer de Guadalupe. It is believed that all mineralization in the Placer de Guadalupe-Mina Plomosas area is of Tertiary age. The petroleum potential of Chihuahua has not yet been proven.
