Abstract

Livingstonite is a mineral discovered in Mexico nearly a century ago; despite its importance and cardinal value in mineralogical systematics, it has not been reported to exist outside the country.

It is a prismatic mineral, typical of the acicular sulfosalt group characterized by a common translation of 4 Å in the direction of elongation, and it is the only known member of this group to contain mercury.

Following its very brief and predominantly chemical initial description, it remained unchanged for 60 years until it received more direct mineralogical attention and, subsequently, the honor of a highly commendable structural study.

Given its paragenetic conditions and the prevalence of stibnite, it was assumed that it should be frequently found in stibnite deposits near mercury deposits. Its cationic composition highlights the potential economic importance of its mineral deposits.
