Exploration of the Peninsula of Baja California by the exploratory commission of the Pacific
Keywords:
petroleum, felsic rocks, hydrocarbons, estuary, mineral resourcesAbstract
This study was requested by the President of the Republic, with the goal of investigating the possibility that there were oil deposits in the peninsula (whose problem of original energetic sources of the region is still unresolved, only counting with the geothermal field of Cierro Pietro), although it was only circumscribed to the southern end. For such a purpose, a commission was named that had as goals the study, in addition to the oil resources, of the mineral resources, as well as of the other types of resources.
Part 1, The Geological Exploration Commission in the peninsula of Baja California, by Vicente Gálvez, p. 1-70: According to the information that there was about the hints of oil, a three-route tour was effected: (1) La Paz-Juan Márquez, (2) La Paz-Todos los Santos and (3) Todos los Santos-Boca de Jacinto-El Gaspareño-El Pescadero-Todos los Santos (southeastern region of Todos los Santos, including El Pescadero, where the most hopeful reports of oil were situated). The mining district El Triunfo-San Antonio was studied because it was the most important one of the region. Its lámina II is a map of the southern region of Baja California, scale 1: 750,000.
Part 2, Sierra del Novillo or Trinchera, by Enrique Díaz-Lozano, p. 71-92: This part included the study of the felsic rocks near La Paz and it was extended to the south of the range of La Laguna and the island of Cerralvo. It includes a geological sketch of a part of the range.
Part 3, Geological exploration of La Purísima, by Antonio Pastor-Giraud, p. 93-107: With the aim of surveying cross and longitudinal sections of the peninsula, three tours were carried out: (1) Loreto-San Gregorio, (2) San Gregorio-San José de García, and (3) San José de García-Santa Rosalía. Some superficial manifestations of hydrocarbons consistent with tar were identified. It is considered favorable to obtain hydrocarbons in the coastal area of the Pacific, in which conditions of estuary were recognized because of the display of salt, plaster and tar. A map of Baja California is included, scale 1: 800,000.
